Man Shot During Attempted Robbery, Returns Fire At Suspects: Hamden PD

The victim, who was hospitalized, returned fire at the suspects after being shot during an attempted robbery at a gas station, police said.

HAMDEN, CT — A man was hospitalized after being shot during an attempted robbery at a gas station Friday afternoon in Hamden, according to police.

Police responded to the parking lot of the Gulf Express gas station at 144 Arch Street around 4 p.m. on reports of a shooting, according to Detective Sean J. Dolan.

Responding officers found a 28-year-old Hamden man with a gunshot wound to the leg, Dolan said.

The preliminary investigation found that the victim was inside his car in the parking lot and was approached by two suspects who attempted to rob him, Dolan said. One of the suspects shot the victim during the robbery, according to Dolan.

Dolan said the victim, who has a Connecticut pistol permit and was armed, returned fire at the suspects. Both suspects left the scene before police arrived, according to Dolan.

The shooting victim was treated at the scene by Hamden Fire Rescue personnel and taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital with injuries that weren’t life-threatening, according to Dolan.

Dolan said it wasn’t known if the suspects were injured during the shooting.

Detectives from the Hamden Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit and Crime Scene Unit are actively investigating the shooting. Ballistic evidence was recovered at the scene by police, according to Dolan.
