New Haven Man Faces Several Charges Following Shoplifting Incident at Wal-Mart

Cornelius Green, 52, is accused of pushing a security officer before fleeing the store.

A New Haven man was arrested for allegedly shoplifting at Wal-Mart and pushing a security officer backwards before fleeing the store, Police Capt. Ronald Smith said in a press release.

Police responded to Wal-Mart Saturday afternoon on a report of a shoplifting in progress involving a physical altercation.

Smith said responding officers were advised by Central Communications that the individual responsible was running toward Dixwell Avenue. Moments later, Officer Dennis Putnam arrested the individual, who was later identified as Cornelius Green, who was in the possession of a stolen tool.

Smith said investigation revealed that Green removed an alarm clock from the shelf and returned it with a receipt that he had in his pocket. When he was approached by a security officer, Green pushed the security officer backwards and fled from the store.

Green, 52, of 38 Sheffield Street, first floor, in New Haven, was arrested on charges of third-degree robbery, sixth-degree larceny, possession of a shoplifting device and breach of peace. Green, who was detained at police headquarters on a $5,000 bond, is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Dec. 29.
