Obituary: Charles J. Smith, 91, Formerly Of Hamden

Charles was a truly great dad, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Charles Joseph Smith, 91, of Wallingford, formerly of Hamden, passed away on April 13, 2023 at Masonicare in Wallingford.

He was the husband of the late Evelyn J. Sablitz Smith. Charles was born in Hamden on October 20, 1931 to the late Merton Alexander Smith and Keith Ferguson Smith. He grew up in Hamden and Felton, DE. Charles joined the U.S. Air Force in 1949 and served in Moses Lake, WA and in England. He and Evelyn owned and operated Kwik Way Laundry for many years. Charles worked at Goodman Motors in Hamden and retired from Hamden Public Works as a mechanic in 1994.

He was a devoted member of St. Peter’s on the Hill and Grace and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. He served on the vestry, sang in the choir, served as Senior Warden, Chalicist, Arden House Minister, and the Sexton. He was a member of the Hamden Barbershop Quartet and the Mix District Volunteer Fire Dept. Company #7. He served on the Hamden Credit Union and was a member of the Good Sam Camping Club.

Charles is survived by his beloved daughters, Cinda D’Addio and Torrie Kimball, his grandchildren, Donna Abate, Jennifer Neuroh (Vaughn), Matthew and Andrew D’Addio and Devyn Pinney, and great-grandchildren, Alex anda Tyler Neuroh and Gemma D’Addio. He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Jessica Lynn D’Addio, sisters, Shirley Cahill and Dorothy Smith Ellis, and brother, Merton A. Smith, Jr.

A truly great dad, grandfather and great-grandfather, he will be missed, but we are comforted he is with Mom once again.

Friends may visit with his family on Saturday, April 22nd from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. at Beecher & Bennett Funeral Home, 2300 Whitney Avenue, Hamden. A prayer service will be held at 3:30 p.m., officiated by the Reverend Dr. E. Bevan Stanley. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Hamden Plains Cemetery.
