Obituary: Julie Hawkes Heninger, 86, Of Hamden

She contributed to the community as a Girl Scout leader and a library volunteer at the Hamden middle and elementary schools for many years.

HAMDEN, CT — (From Sisk Brothers Funeral Home): Julie Hawkes Heninger, of Hamden, died November 15, 2022 at age 86. She leaves behind her husband of 65 years, Dr. George Robert Heninger, of Hamden CT, children, Steven G. Heninger (Regina Trott) of Cumberland MD, Catharine H. Duman, of Guilford CT, Karen Heninger of Hudson MA, Brian T. Heninger (Margarita) of Springfield VA, brother Robert Hawkes (David Ellis) and grandchildren Joshua Trott (Crista Kowalski) Greencastle, PA, Kathleen Duman of Falls Church VA, Carolyn M. Duman of Guilford CT, Anna Heninger of Springfield VA. She was predeceased by sister Barbara Hawkes and son in law Ronald Duman.

Julie was born June 1, 1934 to parents Virginia and Thomas Hawkes in Salt Lake City UT, grew up in Ogden UT and attended the University of Utah where she and George met and began their partnership that would span 6 and a half decades. When George finished medical school in 1960, they packed up their belongings and drove from Utah to Boston MA. This was followed by 4 more moves before they settled in Hamden CT in 1966. Julie was the epitome of a dedicated wife and mother. She unwaveringly supported George's career and his time-consuming commitment to long-distance running, while managing to see to all of the needs of 4 young children in a loving and vibrant household.

She actively contributed to the community as a Girl Scout leader and regional coordinator of cookie sales, and a library volunteer at the Hamden middle and elementary schools for many years. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi where she made good friends and was active in the New Haven chapter for many years.

In later years Julie was a devoted grandmother and spent countless hours playing games, reading, engaging in creative activities and many other endeavors with grandchildren. Julie and George had several wonderful trips together including to Europe, family trips to the mountains out west and the summer family vacations in Cape Cod that were cherished by all.

Julie was known for her characteristic cheerful and optimistic nature. She was a generous presence in her family and community and will be missed.
