Obituary: Peter A Burke, 85, of Hamden

Peter and his wife Mary were co-owners of the Country Club Grille for over 13 years.

Peter A Burke, 85, of Hamden, passed away peacefully in his home on Christmas night. Survived by his beloved wife of 58 years Mary Manning Burke and four sons, Peter J. Burke (Lynda) of Hamden, James C. Burke (Staci) of North Branford, John T. Burke (Angelique) of North Branford, and Andrew F. Burke (Elyse) of Hamden. He also has 10 grandchildren, Keegan, Braeden, Emily, Collin, Megan, Iain, Saoirse, Gavin, Madelyn, and Siobhan Burke. Son of Angela and John Burke (deceased). Predeceased by his siblings John, James, Joseph, Patrick, Maureen, Frances, Rose, Angela, and Edward Burke, survived by his sister Claire Cleary.

Born in 1932 in County Offaly, Ireland, Peter immigrated to the United States in 1956 and retired from the New Haven Regional Water Authority with over 30 years of service. Peter and Mary were co-owners of the Country Club Grille for over 13 years. He was an active member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, President of the New Haven Gaelic Football and Hurling Club in 1963 and the founder of the Irish American Community Center Retirees Club. Peter was also an active member of The Gaelic Players, as well as the first Chairman of the New Haven Feis, now known as Connecticut Irish Festival.

During his 50+ years involved with the IACC/ NHGF&H Club, Peter received many awards including Irish Man of the Year, Parade Committee Appreciation Award and IACC Cultural Award. Peter also received many medals representing Connecticut State Hurlers.
