Obituary: Russell D. Mower, 79, Of Hamden

He had a long career as a dedicated history teacher in the Hamden Public Schools. He was very active in the community.

HAMDEN, CT — (From Beecher & Bennett Funeral Home): Russell D. Mower, 79, of Hamden, passed away February 17, 2023. Born in New Haven on March 1, 1943, he was the son of the late Pauline E. (Patterson) Mower and Russell H. Mower.

Russell was a graduate of Notre Dame High School and Providence College, and received his Master’s in Education from Southern Connecticut State University. He had a long career as a dedicated history teacher in the Hamden Public Schools.

A resident of Hamden for most of his life, he was very active in the community and in the parishes of Saint John the Baptist, Saint Anne’s, Saint Rita’s, and Blessed Sacrament, singing in the church choir and as a soloist.

Russell volunteered at the New England Air Museum at Bradley International Airport for many years and also at the soup kitchen at St. Anne’s Church. He loved music, history and politics, and also was an ardent bicycle rider and photographer.

Russell is survived by his cousin, Carol Weiler Krems and her husband Kenneth Krems of Newton, MA and their children, Katherine Weiler Krems and her husband Sebastian Jakubowski and their 3 children, and Jennifer Weiler Krems and her husband Sarat Kollimarla. He was also godfather to both Katherine and Jennifer. Russell also leaves his good friends Mario and Josephine Marra of North Haven and their children, Mario and Gabriella.

Friends may visit with his family at Beecher & Bennett Funeral Home, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden on March 6, 2023 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. His Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. in St. Paul VI Parish/Blessed Sacrament Church, 321 Circular Ave., Hamden. Burial will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hamden.
