HAMDEN, CT — A fire involving a resident burning branches and twigs spread to a neighbor’s home Wednesday afternoon in Hamden, according to fire officials.

Firefighters responded around 4:10 p.m. to a fire on West Easton Street in Hamden. Engine 2 arrived and reported two vehicles on fire with extension to the vinyl siding of the home, according to Fire Marshal Brian Dolan.

“Engine 2 stretched a line and proceeded to extinguish the fire,” Dolan wrote in a news release. “The fire spread was limited to the exterior wall of the home, the vehicles in the driveway and the fence.”

Dolan said an investigation found that the fire originated in the neighboring backyard.

“A resident was burning branches and twigs in a barrel,” Dolan wrote. “An ember ignited nearby dry leaves against a vinyl fence. The fire spread to the vehicles that were on the other side of the fence parked near the house. The Hamden Fire Department would like to remind the public that an open burn permit is required to burn brush. Open burning is not allowed when the Connecticut DEEP has determined that the fire danger level is HIGH, VERY HIGH, or EXTREME even if a resident has been issued a burn permit.”
