Retail Cannabis Shop Proposed For Car Dealership In Hamden

A retail cannabis shop is being proposed to take over the current location of a car dealership in Hamden.

HAMDEN, CT — A retail cannabis shop is being proposed to take over the current location of the Keating Bros. car dealership at the intersection of Whitney Avenue and Washington Avenue in Hamden, according to multiple reports.

WFSB 3 reported developers are anticipating to have 200 customers per day, and the proposed shop would have around a 30-space parking lot.

The Planning and Zoning Commission held a public hearing this week on the proposal.

Some residents at the hearing approved of the business, but had concerns about traffic in the area, according to WTNH News 8. The developers agreed to gather more traffic data to present to the town, WTNH reported.

The New Haven Register reported that Marybeth Keating spoke during the public hearing and said that her family was “forced” to sell the land because they haven’t been able to pay their taxes. She reported that the car dealership and auto repair shop, Keating Automotive, had combined losses of more than $130,000 in 2022, according to the Register.

Keating urged the commission to approve the dispensary, saying it would be an asset to the neighborhood and the best company for the town, the Register reported.

The Planning and Zoning Commission continued the public hearing to Oct. 10.
