Sacred Heart Academy Starts 'How Words Can Build You Up or Tear You Down' Campaign

The Academy will partner with the Guidance Dept. to run a year-long 'Words Matter Initiative' to help students notice the power words have.

From The Sacred Heart Academy: The Sacred Heart Academy Peer Connection student organization, in conjunction with the Academy’s Guidance Department, is running a year-long Words Matter initiative. In the “How Words Can Build You Up or Tear You Down” campaign, Peer Connectors (PCs) work with underclassmen speaking to the power and impact of words through role playing, digital media, pamphlets, and guest speakers.

Since fall, black and white photos of PCs with words that have had a negative impact on them have been on display throughout the school. As the school year progresses, color photos of PC members with words that promote positive self-image will be displayed. In December, PCs created and presented skits to underclassmen demonstrating the impact of words.

Peer Connection, founded in 1984, is made up of sophomores, juniors, and seniors who embrace a “reaching out of hands” mission statement to provide support to others in the community. To become a “PC,” students go through an extensive application process and, if accepted, a rigorous training process. “Peer Connectors truly embody the values of Sacred Heart,” shared a member of the organization.
