Sacred Heart Academy Wins Class M Championship

The Sacred Heart Academy cross country team recently won the program's first CIAC Class M championship.

HAMDEN, CT — The Sacred Heart Academy cross country team recently won the school’s first CIAC Class M championship.

Sacred Heart won the team title with 71 points, while Tolland finished second with 113 points and New Fairfield was third with 146 points. The championship was held Nov. 1 at Wickham Park in Manchester.

Sacred Heart’s seven-member team consisted of Kristina Ponzio, Emma Kirck, Natalie Votto, Cassidy Colantonio, Hailey Spooner, Meghan Kirck, and Karly Martino.

“The girls dedicated themselves in the summer, each week they ran miles on their own and together,” SHA coach Pat Redding said. “When they came to me for our first practice they were in great shape and ready to go.”

Ponzio and Kirck, both juniors, earned All-State honors and were named to the All-SCC First Team, according to Redding.
