Shots Fired Miss Man, Strike Muhammad Islamic Center: Hamden Police

The shooter fled the scene early Sunday morning in a minivan that was later involved in an accident and also fled from that scene.

HAMDEN, CT — Multiple shots were fired at a man who was standing near his vehicle early Sunday morning but he was uninjured in the shooting, which occurred in the 800 block of Dixwell Avenue, according to police.

Police later learned that the nearby Muhammad Islamic Center, located at 870 Dixwell Avenue, was struck several times with bullets and police believe the damage was caused during the shooting.

Police responded to the reports of “shots fired” in the area of Dixwell Avenue and North Street at about 1 a.m. on Dec. 4, according to Capt. Ronald Smith.

Smith said investigation revealed that a 53-year-old Hamden resident was standing near his motor vehicle, in the 800 block of Dixwell Avenue.

An individual, described as a black male in his 30s with a thin build and braided hair, fired multiple gunshots at him, according to Smith. The victim was not injured in the shooting.

Smith said the individual fled on foot and then entered a minivan.

Moments later, Officer Eric Hallstrom observed a motor vehicle accident on Arch Street and determined that one of the vehicles involved in the accident transported the shooter.

The vehicle, which fled from the accident scene, was recovered, unoccupied, on Morse Street, according to Smith.

Shortly thereafter, Hamden Police discovered that the Muhammad Islamic Center, 870 Dixwell Avenue, was struck several times with bullets. Police believe that the damage sustained by the Muhammad Islamic Center was caused during the shooting.
