HAMDEN, CT — A student was arrested Tuesday after police said he brought a gun to the Hamden Collaborative Learning Center and also got into a fight at the school.

Police responded to the Hamden Collaborative Learning Center at 670 Wintergreen Ave. around 8:30 a.m. on the report of a fight, according to Sgt. Angela Vey.

Vey said Officer Keron Bryce spoke with school staff, who indicated there was a fight between Kahlil Davis-Yancey and a 16-year-old student, who sustained minor injuries.

School security told Bryce that they received information that there was a handgun inside the school. Bryce then found the gun in a closet of one of the classrooms, according to Vey.

Vey said Bryce determined that the gun was placed there by Davis-Yancey. The 9mm handgun, and large capacity magazine, were seized as evidence, according to Vey.

Davis-Yancey was arrested and charged with carrying a pistol without a permit, negligent storage of a firearm, first-degree reckless endangerment, possession of a weapon on school grounds and illegal possession of a large capacity magazine. He was held in lieu of a $150,000 bond.

Vey said no one was injured during the incident, and there is no threat to students or staff.

“The safety and security of our students and staff is our highest priority,” Vey wrote in a news release. “We will continue to partner with the Hamden Superintendent of Schools to ensure our school community is cared for and safe. The Hamden Police Department will increase our presence at the Hamden Collaborative Learning Center School and have our School Resource Officers visit the school daily to meet with students and staff.”
