Suspected Car Thief Caught at Sleeping Giant State Park: Hamden Police

Police observed an unoccupied stolen vehicle in the parking lot and waited for the suspect to return and then arrested him.

HAMDEN, CT — A suspected car thief was caught after apparently stopping for a hike at Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden.

At about 5 p.m. on Dec. 6, Hamden Police Officer Andrew Lipford located an unoccupied, stolen motor vehicle that was parked in the parking lot of Sleeping Giant State Park. The vehicle was stolen in Darien, according to Capt. Ronald Smith.

Smith said Lipford and several other Hamden Police officers subsequently conducted surveillance on the vehicle. Shortly thereafter, Marcus Colon and two other individuals entered the stolen vehicle, according to Smith.

Colon was promptly arrested and transported to Hamden Police Headquarters.

Hamden Police located several stolen items inside of the stolen vehicle. Smith said investigation revealed that the items were stolen in numerous burglaries that occurred in Stamford.

Colon, 22, of Ursula Place in Stamford, was charged with second-degree larceny, two counts of fifth-degree larceny, sixth-degree larceny and theft of a credit card.

Colon, who was detained on a $25,000 bond, is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Dec. 19.
