Two Hamden Teens Charged in Connection with Dixwell Avenue Shootings

Tasheem Scott, 18, and Shamont Newton, 18, were arrested on warrants.

Hamden police have arrested two town teenagers in connection with a shooting that occurred in the area of Dixwell Avenue and Dudley Street on Dec. 4.

Tasheem Scott, 18, and Shamont Newton, 18, were both arrested on warrants related to the incident in which two men were shot.

Police responded to the scene on Dec. 4 and officers located two individuals that had been shot. Corey Bell, 20, of New Haven suffered a gunshot wound to the chin and was transported to Yale-New Hospital with serious injuries.

The second victim, Jaywon Lacy, 18, of Hamden was shot; however, he was not injured. Police Capt. Ronald Smith said the bullet pierced Lacy’s clothing and struck a steel knife that was located in his pocket.

Smith said Detective Jomo Crawford conducted an extensive investigation that led to the application of arrest warrants for Scott and Newton.

Scott turned himself in at Hamden Police Headquarters on Dec. 8. He was arrested on charges of first-degree assault, criminal attempt to commit first-degree assault and carrying a pistol without a permit. Scott, who was detained on a $250,000 court ordered bond, is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Dec. 22.

Newton was arrested Dec. 12 for his involvement in the shooting. He was charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree assault and carrying a pistol without a permit. Newton, who was detained on a court ordered $200,000 bond, is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Dec. 29.
