Connecticut Weather: Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Parts of the State

We share the latest timeline for when the snow is expected to arrive today and what you can expect for Monday's commute.

The biggest development with the much discussed light snowstorm for Connecticut Sunday and Monday is that the timeline has changed a bit, and it appears most of the snow that will accumulate will occur Sunday night and temps will increase early Monday morning leading to a mix and then plain rain.

The timing of the mix and changeover to plain rain will depend on where you live. If you’re at the immediate coast expect plain rain for the Monday drive to work, if you’re inland you might see a mix of snow and rain, and if you live in northern Connecticut the snow is likely to hold on for the Monday morning commute.

If you want a plowable and shovelable type of snow, well you’ll need to move to Hartford and Tolland counties where they are under a Winter Weather Advisory. Those two northern counties could see between 3-6 inches of snow before it wraps up Monday afternoon. And there may be a trace amount of ice at the end of the storm in Hartford and Tolland counties too, adding to a very messy Monday morning commute.

For Southern Connecticut, there are no advisories posted as of yet for Sunday night and or Monday morning. With that said even areas on the immediate coast are still likely to see up to an inch of snow before the quick changeover to rain, and areas just away from the shore in southern Connecticut will still receive between 1-2 inches of snow, and the Monday morning commute is still expected to be a messy one there.

NBC Connecticut Meteorologist Darren Sweeney said, “Our thinking has not changed in terms of amounts and arrivals times. Most snow north, less south. Most of the state seeing rising temps for the Monday morning commute.”

NBC Connecticut Meteorologist Ryan Hanrahan said late Saturday that “by dark (Sunday) we're going to see a really deep layer of the clouds above our heads that have a temperature around -15 degrees C. Why does that matter? That is the temperature where big, fluffy snowflakes can grow with the greatest efficiency! I think we could see a bit of an "overperformer" (Sunday) evening with big fluffy flakes adding up in many areas. No more than an inch or two ... but don't be surprised to see a picturesque fluffy snow in the evening. The main batch of precipitation comes in around 3 a.m. and that will be a quick wintry mix burst (snow/sleet/freezing rain) that quickly goes to rain from south to north as warm air moves in. By 7 a.m. temperatures will be at or above freezing south of I-84 and near 32F north of there.

And it’s way off into the future but snow is already forecast for next Saturday. We’ll see.

Timeline of snow and how much according to the National Weather Service:
