Woman Carjacked At Knifepoint In Hamden: Police

The suspected carjacker got into two separate accidents with the stolen vehicle, which sent several people to the hospital, police said.

HAMDEN, CT — A woman was carjacked at knifepoint Wednesday afternoon in Hamden, according to police.

Police responded to the area of Whitney Avenue and Servoss Street around 3 p.m. on the report of a carjacking involving a 52-year-old woman, according to Sgt. Angela Vey.

The victim told police that she was sitting in her vehicle on Servoss Street when a young man opened the front passenger door. He brandished a knife, and told her to get out of the car, according to Vey.

Vey said the investigation found that a 14-year-old boy from Farmington, who was a resident at the Children’s Center at 1400 Whitney Avenue, was the suspect. The teen walked off campus, acquired a knife from an unlocked vehicle, and approached the victim while she was sitting in her vehicle, according to Vey.

The teen took the vehicle, and while traveling north on Dixwell Avenue, got into two separate accidents and left the scene for both of them, according to Vey.

Vey said the juvenile continued to travel north, and got into a “major motor vehicle accident” at the intersection of Dixwell Avenue and Whitney Avenue. The juvenile, who wasn’t injured, tried to run away but was apprehended at the scene by Hamden police, according to Vey.

Several occupants of the damaged vehicles were taken to the hospital for moderate injuries, Vey said.

The juvenile was charged with robbery involving an occupied motor vehicle, reckless driving, operating without a license, evading responsibility, following too close and failure to drive in proper lane. The juvenile is scheduled to appear in Superior Court for Juvenile Matters later this month, according to Vey.

Officers from the Patrol Division, Traffic Division and Major Crimes Detectives all assisted with the investigation, Vey said.
