2 Perish, Including 9-Year-Old, In Tragic CT Fire

Two victims have died following a Plainfield fire Tuesday night.

PLAINFIELD, CT — A 9-year-old child and one other person are dead following a fire at a home in Plainfield, according to media reports. Fire officials said in a social media post that they responded to the blaze at the 800 block of Norwich Road at 10 p.m. Tuesday.

The second victim in the tragedy was an 83-year-old man, WFSB reported.

The homeowner was outside when firefighters arrived and told them that two people were still inside, including the child, according to The New Haven Register. The flames from the fire prevented crews from entering the building until 10:40 p.m., at which point they found the bodies of the two victims.

The two victims had been sleeping on the second floor of the home. It's unclear if the home had any working smoke alarms, according to WFSB.

The local fire marshal, local police, and State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit are investigating the origin and cause of the fire. Investigators remained on the scene overnight into Wednesday morning.

A Plainfield fire official told the Norwich Bulletin that fire was "blowing out of every window and every door of the house." This could compromise the structure's floors and ceilings and led to a defensive fight from the outside.

Plainfield school officials have received notification of the child's death and are providing support for those who need it following the tragedy.

The victims' identities and cause of death will be released following an autopsy.

Town records show the home is owned by William and Elaine Garriepy, according to The Norwich Bulletin.
