40 Layoffs in Proposed Hartford Budget
Mayor Luke Bronin is hoping to avoid increasing taxes.

HARTFORD, CT - Mayor Luke Bronin has proposed a $557 million budget for Hartford in 2016-17, which calls for laying off 40 city workers but could avoid a tax increase for residents.
The Hartford Courant reports that in addition to the layoffs, the mayor also is looking for other concessions from unions to save money, in addition to other cuts, in an effort to patch a more than $48 million deficit. Hartford government currently employs more than 1,300 people.
Also, his plan calls for emptying the city's rainy day fund and pouring that $11.5 million into the operating budget.
