Hartford Launches Program Letting Section 8 Housing Vouchers Go Toward Mortgages

Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam announced the program via a video on Thursday, April 30.

HARTFORD, CT — Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam announced Thursday a new program that will allow some Section 8 voucher holders to apply their housing assistance toward mortgage payments, part of a broader effort to expand homeownership opportunities in the capital city.

The program, launching Friday, May 1, is open to residents who currently receive Section 8 vouchers through the city of Hartford and Imagineers, according to the mayor.

“I am so excited to announce that starting Friday, May 1, there will be a new program that will allow you to use section 8 vouchers to help pay for a mortgage!” Arulampalam said in a statement.

Participants will also have access to support services, including savings plans, homeownership counseling and credit counseling, as part of what the mayor described as “a holistic approach that allows you to transition from being a renter to a homeowner.”

City officials said the initiative is being implemented in partnership with Liberty Bank, The Connecticut Project Action Fund, and Mutual Housing Association of Greater Hartford, Inc.

“Thank you to everyone who made this possible,” Arulampalam said, adding that the program aims to expand access to homeownership for Hartford residents.
