Hartford firefighters assisted a mother duck by rescuing several ducklings from a storm drain, the second such rescue this month.

HARTFORD, CT — Hartford firefighters rescued several ducklings trapped inside a storm sewer Saturday morning, May 16, near a Stop & Shop on New Park Avenue, according to the Hartford Fire Department.

Fire officials said crews from Ladder Co. 5 responded around 6 a.m. on May 16 to the grocery store at 150 New Park Ave. after customers and a CT Transit supervisor noticed a distressed mother duck near a storm sewer catch basin.

According to the department, firefighters discovered multiple ducklings trapped below the grate inside the storm drain.

Crews entered the storm sewer and retrieved the ducklings individually before reuniting them with the mother duck, officials said.

The fire department said the duck family was safely released after the rescue.

The incident came roughly two weeks after Hartford firefighters conducted another duckling rescue on Park River Drive on May 2, according to the department.

“Another successful rescue. Another family reunited,” the Hartford Fire Department said in a social media post announcing the rescue.
