HARTFORD, CT — It was a grand day this week as more than three years of cleaning up, repairing, and rebuilding after a devastating flood culminated in a new flagship library for the city.
Hartford Public Library officials marked the full reopening of the Downtown Library, 500 Main St., on June 1, celebrating the completion of a $22 million restoration and renovation project after severe flooding in 2022 forced the building's closure.
Library leaders and community members gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday morning at the flagship branch, which sustained extensive damage when a pipe burst on Christmas Eve 2022.
The flooding affected four floors of the building and led to a prolonged closure while repairs and renovations were completed.
To allow employees to participate in the celebration, all Hartford Public Library locations opened at 1 p.m. Monday. The Downtown Library reopened to the public immediately following the ceremony.
"Today marks the full reopening of our long-awaited Downtown Library," Hartford Public Library said in an announcement. "We are officially fully restored, fully reimagined, but most importantly, fully yours."
The reopening concludes a multi-phase recovery effort that began after the December 2022 flood.
The first floor briefly reopened in late 2024 following initial repairs, while work continued throughout the remainder of the building.
The entire facility reopened Monday, June 1.
The renovated library includes several new and expanded community-focused spaces.
The American Place & Social Innovation Center will provide adult education classrooms, immigration services and social service programs aimed at improving community health and economic outcomes.
The Hartford Business Resource Center will support entrepreneurs, small businesses and workforce development initiatives through a partnership with Capital Workforce Partners.
The reimagined Hartford History Center has been redesigned to increase public access and provide more interactive opportunities for residents to learn about the city's history.
The Sweetland Patricelli Family HPL Studios will offer audio and video production facilities, educational programming and media career development opportunities. The studio will operate in partnership with Hartford Public Access Television.
The renovated building also includes HPL Hall, a new gathering space designed for community events, discussions and collaborative projects, including programming with UConn's CoLab, an interdisciplinary research and innovation initiative.
Library officials said a week of events and celebrations is planned to showcase the new spaces and services available at the Downtown Library.
