HARTFORD, CT — The University of Connecticut celebrated the opening Monday of a new downtown Hartford residence hall that will provide housing for about 200 undergraduate students attending the university's Hartford campus.
UConn President Radenka Maric led a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new Pratt Street Residence Hall at 64 Pratt St., joined by state and local officials, university leaders and community and corporate partners.
About 200 students are expected to begin moving into the residence hall's apartment-style accommodations next week.
UConn said the building is fully occupied for its opening.
The project converted former office space into a four-story student residence with a central atrium.
In addition to living spaces, the building includes classrooms, lounges, a fitness area and gathering space designed for students.
The residence hall's location places students on Pratt Street, a historic brick-lined, pedestrian-only street featuring restaurants, shops and other businesses.
The building is about a five-block walk from UConn Hartford and is also near PeoplesBank Arena and other downtown attractions.
University officials said the project is intended to enhance the undergraduate experience at UConn Hartford while contributing to economic activity and vitality in downtown Hartford.
The opening adds a residential component for students attending UConn's downtown campus and puts those students within walking distance of classes as well as businesses, restaurants and entertainment venues.
