HARTFORD, CT — Hartford will honor fallen police detective Robert "Bobby" Garten on Sunday, three years after he was killed in the line of duty, with the honorary renaming of High Street as "Bobby's Way."

The Hartford Police Department is inviting the public to attend the ceremony at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, outside police headquarters at 253 High St.

Garten joined the Hartford Police Department in 2015 as a member of Academy Class 2015-1 and served for eight years.

During his career, Garten worked in patrol, the North Street Crimes Unit, and the Marine Unit, according to police.

"He was known for his kindness, dedication, sense of humor, and ability to connect with those around him," the department said in announcing the ceremony.

Garten was killed in a vehicle accident in the line of duty on Sept. 6, 2023, when a suspect fleeing a traffic stop crashed into the cruiser he was in.

The honorary street designation will be unveiled exactly three years after his death.

"Three years later, his name, his sacrifice, and the legacy he left behind will remain a permanent part of Hartford," police said.

The department described "Bobby's Way" as a lasting tribute to Garten, whose badge number was 1781.

The ceremony is open to the public.
