Hartford Fire Displaces 2 Families, Including 3 Children: HFD

HARTFORD, CT — Seven people, including three children, were displaced after a fire broke out in a two-family home on Ashton Street in Hartford, according to the Hartford Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to 14 Ashton St. shortly after 2:33 p.m. for a report of a possible structure fire.

Arriving crews found heavy smoke throughout the building and a working fire on the second floor, according to the department.

The flames had also spread slightly into the home's finished attic.

Hartford firefighters quickly knocked down the fire and conducted primary and secondary searches of the building. No occupants were found during the searches.

No civilians or firefighters were injured.

Two families — four adults and three children — were displaced by the blaze.

The Hartford Fire Department's Special Services Unit was assisting the residents in coordination with the American Red Cross.

The Red Cross said it assisted in meeting the families' immediate needs.

The organization also provided the families with recovery information covering issues such as cleanup, damaged belongings and important contacts.

Comfort kits containing personal-care items, including toothbrushes, deodorant and shaving supplies, were also provided.

The affected residents are expected to connect with Red Cross caseworkers in the coming days to develop longer-term recovery plans.

The Hartford Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
