HARTFORD/CHESHIRE, CT — A patriotic cake featuring a bald eagle, American flag, and decorations commemorating America's 250th anniversary took top honors at Connecticut's Old State House's fifth annual Election Cake Bake-Off.
Sophia Grestini of Amy's Cakes LLC in Cheshire won the competition, held Saturday, Oct. 24, at the historic landmark at 800 Main St. in downtown Hartford.
As the winner, Grestini will have the opportunity to create the Old State House's birthday cake in May 2027.
Connecticut's Old State House and the Connecticut Democracy Center announced the winner on social media following the event.
"The votes are in... and we have a winner!" organizers wrote.
Grestini's elaborate cake featured multiple tiers decorated in red, white, and blue, with a bald eagle perched at the top.
The design also incorporated an American flag, stars, patriotic symbols and a reference to the nation's 250th anniversary.
The annual competition brought together bakers, judges and visitors for an afternoon of cake tasting, family activities and community celebrations.
Organizers thanked the participating bakers and judges, along with the First Company Governor's Foot Guard and Connecticut's Kid Governor and her Cabinet, for taking part in the festivities.
The event marked the fifth year of the Election Cake Bake Off, which combines baking with activities celebrating civic engagement and Connecticut history.
Grestini's winning creation earned her the opportunity to return next spring to bake a cake celebrating the Old State House's birthday.
"And the icing on the cake? Sophia will be creating the Old State House's birthday cake in May 2027!" organizers wrote.
