Area Athletes Shine at State Open Track and Field Meet

Hartford and Tolland County schools posted 12 individual victories and a team title at Monday's State Open track and field championships.

NEW BRITAIN, CT — Athletes from schools in Patch towns in Hartford and Tolland counties posted some outstanding performances Monday in the State Open track and field championships at Willow Brook Park.

Southington had three individual winners in capturing the girls team competition by posting 35 points, three more than two-time defending champion Bloomfield. Amanda Howe won the shot put and discus, while Megan Biscoglio tied a State Open record in the pole vault.

Bulkeley and Glastonbury each compiled 25 points to tie for sixth, with a total of 22 schools from the region earning points.

Terry Miller of Bulkeley broke State Open records in both the 100 and 200 meter runs, while girls from Rocky Hill, Northwest Catholic, Windsor and Berlin each won individual events.

On the boys' side, won by Danbury with 51 points, the top area team was Hartford Public with 30.5 points. Manchester placed sixth with 23 points; 15 area schools collected at least one point.

Individual events were won by boys from Hartford Public (2) and University.
