Bloomfield Man Guilty In Fatal Stabbing In Hartford: State

A 47-year-old Bloomfield man was convicted Monday in the 2020 killing of a 38-year-old man from Bloomfield at a Hartford address.

HARTFORD/BLOOMFIELD, CT — A Bloomfield man has been convicted of murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of another Bloomfield resident in Hartford in 2020.

Hartford County State's Attorney Sharmese L. Walcott said a Superior Court jury Monday found Troy Hayes, 47, of Bloomfield, guilty of murder and first-degree assault.

The conviction stems from the murder of Dyshawn Copeland, 38, of Bloomfield, and the assault of a female victim on May 21, 2020, in Hartford.

Evidence presented at trial showed on May 21, 2020, police received a 911 call from the female victim reporting she and her friend had been stabbed.

Officers responding to 40 Sherman St. in Hartford found Copeland lying on steps inside of the building, Walcott said.

Copeland and the female victim were transported to the hospital where Copeland succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased, she said.

According to state officials, the surviving victim told detectives she and Copeland were inside her apartment waiting on a food delivery.

Thinking the delivery driver had rung her doorbell, the female victim went to the door where the defendant was waiting, according to authorities.

The defendant entered the building and the female victim ran after him as Hayes rushed to her apartment to confront Copeland, Walcott said.

The defendant poured wine over Copeland’s head and fatally stabbed him, she said.

The defendant then tried to stab the female victim but she managed to defend herself, suffering stab wounds to the arm, authorities said.

During the trial, multiple witnesses testified they saw a man on a red scooter in the area at the time of the incident and surveillance video footage nearby also showed the defendant driving his red scooter, state official said.

Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 4 in Hartford Superior Court.
