Blumenthal and Murphy failed American Horses in the 117th Congress

"Connecticut has the most horses of any New England state with 43,000 in residential and commercial stables." per a survey done by the University of Connecticut. And yet, both of our Senators failed -- for the first and only time I can recall -- to co-sponsor the Safe Act in the 117th Congress.

"This bill prohibits the knowing sale or transport of horses for purposes of human consumption. Specifically, the bill makes it unlawful to knowingly possess, ship, transport, purchase, sell, deliver, or receive a horse for it to be slaughtered for human consumption. It also makes it unlawful to knowingly possess, ship, transport, purchase, sell, deliver, or receive horse flesh, carcass, or part of a carcass for it to be used for human consumption. Violators are subject to criminal penalties."

In fact, only six Senators co-sponsored the Bill, down from 21 in the 116th Congress. 223 members of the House supported the House Version, including the five Representatives from Connecticut.

Anti-horse slaughter advocates had high hopes for the passage of the Safe Act at the beginning of the 117th Congress. One must not assume is the lesson we've learned. Kill Buyers fill their "loads" at auctions, New Holland in PA is the closest to our State. Horses, camp ponies at the close of the summer, old, sick, healthy, racehorses, wild horses, even Budweiser horses have been found dumped at auction. Horses are not food. Both Senators should be reminded of their previous anti-slaughter advocacy and asked why it was that they chose to ignore the plight of thousands upon thousands of companion (and wild who wind up in Kill Buyers' feedlots) horses who are cruelly transported to Canada, Mexico and Japan and barbarically slaughtered, while concious, this go round.

Shame on you, Senator Blumenthal and Senator Murphy.
