Connecticut’s Old State House is pleased to participate in LONG WEEKEND, a city-wide festival where the City of Hartford takes center stage from Wednesday, July 1 to Sunday, July 5! Come celebrate history through the lenses of film, art, music, culture, and technology. It’s a modern gathering rooted in the place where America first learned to write itself into existence.
Did you know that General George Washington and Alexander Hamilton stood on the grounds of Connecticut’s Old State House in September of 1780 to meet with French General Jean-Baptiste de Rochambeau and the Marquis de Lafayette? This meeting marked the start of an alliance that led to American independence and ended the Revolutionary War.
Connecticut’s Old State House stands as a testament to the rich tapestry of our state’s democratic evolution, having housed all three branches of Connecticut’s government from 1796 to 1878.
This historic site has borne witness to some of the most pivotal narratives of freedom, democracy, and civic engagement in our state's history, including the landmark Amistad and Prudence Crandall trials, as well as the Constitutional Convention of 1818. Each of these events not only shaped the legal and social framework of Connecticut but also ignited a spirit of civic responsibility that resonates to this day!
Come for a tour and see Gilbert Stuart’s famous portrait of our nation's first president. Visit the historic House and Senate chambers and see the office of Connecticut’s current Kid Governor and cabinet. Check out an interactive exhibit in the Mortensen Gallery and the portraits and odd collection housed in Joseph Steward’s Museum of Curiosities.
Connecticut’s Old State house is located just steps away from restaurants, entertainment and shopping.
PARKING: Parking at State House Square Parking Garage, located at 75 Market Street, costs a maximum of $10 with validation from Connecticut’s Old State House. Metered street parking is available. Free on-street parking is available after 6 pm and on weekends. Please follow posted parking instructions.

Where better to celebrate America’s 250th than Connecticut’s Old State House, the spot where Connecticut’s patriots conspired, debated, and dared to break with a crown? Step inside the historic courtroom — transformed into a colonial tavern alive with the spirit of 1776. Enjoy tavern fare and conversation as:
Historian Dr. Matthew Warshauer of Central Connecticut State University traces Connecticut’s bold march to independence: from Common Sense and the firebrand Connecticut Courant, to the moment Governor Trumbull called an emergency Assembly on June 14, 1776 and Connecticut declared itself free.
Re-enactor Dayne Rugh steps into the boots of Jonathan Trumbull, giving voice to Connecticut’s own Proclamation of Independence.
Musician Richard Franklin Donohue performs a fiery repertoire of revolutionary-era “musick,” setting the unmistakable mood of a colony on the edge of history.

How are you celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States? Watching fireworks? Visiting museums? Going to a family picnic? Stop by the Connecticut Museum and decorate a picture frame to showcase photos of these special memories!
The fun continues in the Inspire Center, a hands-on, creative space for all ages. People have been using medals, statues, and even souvenir plates as way to honor important moments throughout history. Using inspiration from items in the Museum’s collection, families can design a new way to celebrate their own special event.
While visiting, families can also check out our new exhibitions, Drawn Here: Stories of Hartford’s North End and Rebellious, explorations of moments of change throughout Connecticut history.
Families can continue the learning at home with a Family Activity Kit, a take-home bag full of activities, crafts, and images of items from the museum’s collection. Rick and Dawn carefully craft their vocals and accompaniment to sound as true to a song’s era or style as possible. Their vast repertoire includes music from the Colonial era to the present day. Rick and Dawn use these songs to illustrate the evolution of our nation’s culture and history in an informative and entertaining way.

Throughout the day, visitors are invited to experience history through live interpretation, creative workshops, and community gathering—reflecting on the many ways freedom has been imagined, claimed, and expressed.

Creative Writing and Memoir Writing Workshop Series Two creative writing workshops are offered this summer. The first will be for open forms and begin on July 6th. The second will focus on memoir writing and will start on July&nbsp;8th. They will both meet at Saint James Church, 1018 Farmington Avenue&nbsp; in West Hartford.&nbsp; The&nbsp;dates for open&nbsp;forms are: 7/6. 7/13, 7/20, 7/27, 8/3, and 8/10. These are all Mondays. The dates for the memoir workshops are: 7/8, 7/15, 7/22, 7/29, 8/5, and 8/12. These are&nbsp; Wednesdays. They will both meet from 7:00-8:30 p.m.. The cost is $240.00, and payment is for the series. Sign ups&nbsp;are on a first come first served basis. Registration is required.&nbsp; Writing instructor David Pontrelli is a&nbsp;&nbsp;graduate of Wesleyan University, a certified Connecticut English teacher, and a certified Amherst&nbsp;Writers&nbsp;and Artists&nbsp;workshop&nbsp;leader. HIs participants represent a wide range of ages and abilities, from inner-city children to adult professional&nbsp;writers. The&nbsp;workshops&nbsp;he leads&nbsp;stress participant safety and create an enhanced sense of community. He&nbsp;has been a featured reader at Art Works Gallery, the Hope Out Loud Peace and Arts Festival, and Word House. A shareable toolkit for engaging in challenging conversations is available as a supplement to this experience, giving participants what they need to engage with wildly divergent political viewpoints—and to share space, search for, and build common ground together.

Get ready, Hartford – it’s time to run, walk, dance, and...

MOVE! is the Urban League of Greater Hartford’s signature summer event celebrating the many ways community members are active. Whether running, walking, stretching, playing or dancing, all abilities, ages and fitness levels are welcomed.
The day kicks off with registered participants feeling the personal accomplishment of completing the 5K or 1 Mile race, followed by a free kids run and the YP Games team competition, hosted by the Urban League of Greater Hartford Young Professionals. Throughout the day, the community is invited to enjoy a variety of free fitness activities, crafts and giveaways as well as food and live entertainment while exploring Hartford’s historic Keney Park, the Jewel of the City and one of New England’s largest public parks!
This event is made possible through the generous support of RTX and is inspired by the legacy of Earl Exum, an RTX – Pratt &amp; Whitney executive and Urban League Board officer. Prior to his untimely passing in October 2023, Earl made fitness a priority and inspired colleagues to do so as well by participating in this event, where he was the first to cross the finish line in the inaugural race in 2022.

Hear poignant stories of Civil War soldiers laid to rest at Cedar Hill on this new tour of the historic cemetery. 
Beverly Lucas will share the stories of men who died in service as well as those who made it safely home. The tour offers a moving glimpse into courage, loss, survival, and remembrance.
Admission to the program is $10.00 and free for Cedar Hill Cemetery Foundation members. Advance reservations are recommended and may be made online at www.cedarhillfoundation.org.
Cedar Hill Cemetery is located at 453 Fairfield Avenue, Hartford. The walking tour begins at the flagpole at the end of the entrance drive.
No pets allowed, except for service animals.
