Connecticut's Old State House

Connecticut’s Old State House is pleased to participate in LONG WEEKEND, a city-wide festival where the City of Hartford takes center stage from Wednesday, July 1 to Sunday, July 5! Come celebrate history through the lenses of film, art, music, culture, and technology. It’s a modern gathering rooted in the place where America first learned to write itself into existence.
Did you know that General George Washington and Alexander Hamilton stood on the grounds of Connecticut’s Old State House in September of 1780 to meet with French General Jean-Baptiste de Rochambeau and the Marquis de Lafayette? This meeting marked the start of an alliance that led to American independence and ended the Revolutionary War.
Connecticut’s Old State House stands as a testament to the rich tapestry of our state’s democratic evolution, having housed all three branches of Connecticut’s government from 1796 to 1878.
This historic site has borne witness to some of the most pivotal narratives of freedom, democracy, and civic engagement in our state's history, including the landmark Amistad and Prudence Crandall trials, as well as the Constitutional Convention of 1818. Each of these events not only shaped the legal and social framework of Connecticut but also ignited a spirit of civic responsibility that resonates to this day!
Come for a tour and see Gilbert Stuart’s famous portrait of our nation's first president. Visit the historic House and Senate chambers and see the office of Connecticut’s current Kid Governor and cabinet. Check out an interactive exhibit in the Mortensen Gallery and the portraits and odd collection housed in Joseph Steward’s Museum of Curiosities.
Connecticut’s Old State house is located just steps away from restaurants, entertainment and shopping.
PARKING: Parking at State House Square Parking Garage, located at 75 Market Street, costs a maximum of $10 with validation from Connecticut’s Old State House. Metered street parking is available. Free on-street parking is available after 6 pm and on weekends. Please follow posted parking instructions.
Our Doors Are Open: Our building is mobility friendly with a ramp on the West side entrance and elevator access to all floors. Our bathrooms are on the ground floor and have changing tables. An evening of history, oration &amp; colonial “musick” marking America’s 250th birthday The Evening’s Program.
Where better to celebrate America’s 250th than Connecticut’s Old State House, the spot where Connecticut’s patriots conspired, debated, and dared to break with a crown? Step inside the historic courtroom — transformed into a colonial tavern alive with the spirit of 1776. Enjoy tavern fare and conversation as:
Historian Dr. Matthew Warshauer of Central Connecticut State University traces Connecticut’s bold march to independence: from Common Sense and the firebrand Connecticut Courant, to the moment Governor Trumbull called an emergency Assembly on June 14, 1776 and Connecticut declared itself free.
Re-enactor Dayne Rugh steps into the boots of Jonathan Trumbull, giving voice to Connecticut’s own Proclamation of Independence.
Musician Richard Franklin Donohue performs a fiery repertoire of revolutionary-era “musick,” setting the unmistakable mood of a colony on the edge of history.
Enjoy light tavern fare and a cash bar.

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, join the Stowe Center for Literary Activism and Long Weekend Hartford for a special evening exploring the stories, struggles, and ideals that have shaped our nation.
The evening begins with a Stowe Center community conversation on America250, facilitated by Derek Hall, featuring Connecticut historians, educators, artists, faith leaders, and community advocates. Together, they’ll examine the history of America’s founding, the voices too often left out of that story, and our shared responsibility to build a more just future.
Enjoy complimentary refreshments while connecting with fellow community members before the evening continues with Clint Smith, acclaimed author, poet, and journalist, presenting “America at 250: There Is No One American Story.” Following his keynote, Taneisha Duggan will join Clint Smith for a conversation exploring the complexities of American history, identity, and the stories that shape our future.
This gathering invites neighbors into conversation, reflection, and community connection in a welcoming space where dialogue can spark understanding and action.

Connecticut Museum of Culture and History

Enjoy free Museum admission and participate in these free activities all day long!
How are you celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States? Watching fireworks? Visiting museums? Going to a family picnic? Stop by the Connecticut Museum and decorate a picture frame to showcase photos of these special memories!
The fun continues in the Inspire Center, a hands-on, creative space for all ages. People have been using medals, statues, and even souvenir plates as way to honor important moments throughout history. Using inspiration from items in the Museum’s collection, families can design a new way to celebrate their own special event.
While visiting, families can also check out our new exhibitions, Drawn Here: Stories of Hartford’s North End and Rebellious, explorations of moments of change throughout Connecticut history.
Families can continue the learning at home with a Family Activity Kit, a take-home bag full of activities, crafts, and images of items from the museum’s collection. Rick Spencer and Dawn Indermuehle develop and present theme-based music and history programs, performing songs that give cultural insight into interesting times, places and events in American history. Rick and Dawn carefully craft their vocals and accompaniment to sound as true to a song’s era or style as possible. Their vast repertoire includes music from the Colonial era to the present day. Rick and Dawn use these songs to illustrate the evolution of our nation’s culture and history in an informative and entertaining way.

Join us for a family-friendly July 4 celebration inspired by 6000+ Declarations of Independence, an America250CT project exploring how Black abolitionists declared their own freedom through storytelling, art, and activism.
Throughout the day, visitors are invited to experience history through live interpretation, creative workshops, and community gathering—reflecting on the many ways freedom has been imagined, claimed, and expressed.
<h3>What to Expect</h3>
Live interpreters portraying Frederick Douglass, Harriet Jacobs, and Josiah Henson Comic book workshop with artist Joe Young Kemet character appearance Readings of freedom narratives and declarations of independence Outdoor programming on the Stowe Center grounds (weather permitting)
