Connecticut Museum of Culture and History

Enjoy free Museum admission and participate in these free activities all day long!
How are you celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States? Watching fireworks? Visiting museums? Going to a family picnic? Stop by the Connecticut Museum and decorate a picture frame to showcase photos of these special memories!
The fun continues in the Inspire Center, a hands-on, creative space for all ages. People have been using medals, statues, and even souvenir plates as way to honor important moments throughout history. Using inspiration from items in the Museum’s collection, families can design a new way to celebrate their own special event.
While visiting, families can also check out our new exhibitions, Drawn Here: Stories of Hartford’s North End and Rebellious, explorations of moments of change throughout Connecticut history.
Families can continue the learning at home with a Family Activity Kit, a take-home bag full of activities, crafts, and images of items from the museum’s collection. Connecticut's Old State House

Rick Spencer and Dawn Indermuehle develop and present theme-based music and history programs, performing songs that give cultural insight into interesting times, places and events in American history. Rick and Dawn carefully craft their vocals and accompaniment to sound as true to a song’s era or style as possible. Their vast repertoire includes music from the Colonial era to the present day. Rick and Dawn use these songs to illustrate the evolution of our nation’s culture and history in an informative and entertaining way.

Join us for a family-friendly July 4 celebration inspired by 6000+ Declarations of Independence, an America250CT project exploring how Black abolitionists declared their own freedom through storytelling, art, and activism.
Throughout the day, visitors are invited to experience history through live interpretation, creative workshops, and community gathering—reflecting on the many ways freedom has been imagined, claimed, and expressed.
<h3>What to Expect</h3>
Live interpreters portraying Frederick Douglass, Harriet Jacobs, and Josiah Henson Comic book workshop with artist Joe Young Kemet character appearance Readings of freedom narratives and declarations of independence Outdoor programming on the Stowe Center grounds (weather permitting)

Creative Writing and Memoir Writing Workshop Series Two creative writing workshops are offered this summer. The first will be for open forms and begin on July 6th. The second will focus on memoir writing and will start on July&nbsp;8th. They will both meet at Saint James Church, 1018 Farmington Avenue&nbsp; in West Hartford.&nbsp; The&nbsp;dates for open&nbsp;forms are: 7/6. 7/13, 7/20, 7/27, 8/3, and 8/10. These are all Mondays. The dates for the memoir workshops are: 7/8, 7/15, 7/22, 7/29, 8/5, and 8/12. These are&nbsp; Wednesdays. They will both meet from 7:00-8:30 p.m.. The cost is $240.00, and payment is for the series. Sign ups&nbsp;are on a first come first served basis. Registration is required.&nbsp; Writing instructor David Pontrelli is a&nbsp;&nbsp;graduate of Wesleyan University, a certified Connecticut English teacher, and a certified Amherst&nbsp;Writers&nbsp;and Artists&nbsp;workshop&nbsp;leader. HIs participants represent a wide range of ages and abilities, from inner-city children to adult professional&nbsp;writers. The&nbsp;workshops&nbsp;he leads&nbsp;stress participant safety and create an enhanced sense of community. He&nbsp;has been a featured reader at Art Works Gallery, the Hope Out Loud Peace and Arts Festival, and Word House. He is the author of two chapbooks of poetry and a full-length collection,&nbsp;Poems for Streets and People, published in 2023. Please email, call, or text any questions.
