Campus Notes - Greater Hartford College Students

Notable accomplishments by college students who reside in Hartford, East Hartford and Bloomfield.

GREATER HARTFORD, CT — Here are some recent notable accomplishments by local college students, as provided by readMedia Newswire.

Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic CT

  • More than 1,000 Eastern Connecticut State University students volunteered more than 17,000 hours in the Windham area in the past academic year. On April 19, these students-and the projects and community partners they represent-were honored at the annual Service Expo and Awards, sponsored by Eastern's Center for Community Engagement. Three local residents were among the expo presenters. Italo Bucca of Hartford, who majors in Sociology, presented on his projects with the Windham Middle School After School Program and Windham High School ESOL Mentoring Program, an English language-learning program for Spanish-speaking youth in Willimantic. Makayla Mowel of East Hartford, who majors in Women's and Gender Studies and Pre-Elementary Education, won the Student Community Engagement Award for her involvement with Jumpstart, a program that focuses on early childhood literacy. As a Jumpstart AmeriCorps member and team leader for three years, Mowel has spent more than 1,000 hours working directly with children and supporting other Jumpstart volunteers. Sean Hurley of East Hartford, who majors in Physical Education, presented on his projects with the Windham Heights After School Program, Windham Middle School After School Program, and Health and Wellness at Windham Heights.
  • A group of mathematics students at Eastern Connecticut State University was inducted into Kappa Mu Epsilon (KME), the national honor society for mathematics, on April 20. Among the inductees was James Malizia of Hartford, who majors in Mathematics. KME is a specialized honor society in Mathematics. It was founded in 1931 to promote the interest of mathematics among undergraduate students. Its chapters are located in colleges and universities of recognized standing that offer a strong mathematics major. Members are selected from students of mathematics and other closely related fields who have maintained standards of scholarship and who have professional merit and have attained academic distinction.
  • A cohort of high-achieving psychology students from Eastern Connecticut State University were honored at the annual Psychology Honors Night and Psi Chi Induction Ceremony on April 23. Among the recognized students were Autumn Henry of Hartford, who majors in Psychology and was inducted into Psi Chi, and Dominique McLean of Bloomfield, who majors in Psychology and was inducted into Psi Chi. Psi Chi is the international honor society for the field of psychology. Eastern students who are inducted into Psi Chi must attain a 3.5 GPA in psychology and a 3.0 GPA overall.
