Suspect Shot, Killed In Botched Carjacking Near Hartford's Parkville Market

The shooting happened on Park Street near an apartment building.

HARTFORD, CT — Hartford police are investigating a frightening carjacking attempt near a prominent food market that ended in a hail of gunfire and the death of one carjacking suspect.

According to WFSB Channel 3, two suspects reportedly tried to carjack another individual with their guns drawn Monday afternoon.

The driver of the car then pulled out a gun and exchanged gunfire with the suspects, according to WFSB Channel 3.

Both suspects were shot, with one suspect — identified as 23-year-old Jahziel Phillips-Ray — killed, according to WFSB Channel 3.

The other suspect, who is expected to survive his wounds and has been charged in connection with the crime, is identified as 22-year-old Joseph Ray, according to WFSB Channel 3.

WFSB Channel 3 reports the driver of the vehicle being carjacked was also shot and is in critical-but-stable condition.

WTNH Channel 8 reports the incident happened in a busy neighborhood near the well-known Parkville Market, which is a popular food market bringing in locals and out-of-towners for diverse, internationally themed dining options.

The shooting was on Park Street near an apartment building nearby, WTNH Channel 8 reported.
