This CT City Has Highest Credit Card Debt In The Country

BRIDGEPORT, CT — Bridgeport holds the number one spot in the country when it comes to high credit card debt, according to a study by Compare Cards. One in six credit cardholders in Bridgeport carry a balance of $10,000 or more.

The organization analyzed the 100 largest metropolitan statistical areas to see which have credit cardholders with the highest balances.

"Nearly 23% of credit cardholders in the Bridgeport metropolitan area owe more than $10,000 on their cards," according to CompareCards. "Almost 2% of cardholders in Bridgeport owe more than $50,000, which is also the highest among the nation’s 100 biggest metros."

The organization also found regional differences in credit card debt. Those along the East and West coasts are more likely to carry five-figure debts than those in the South.

Connecticut had three cities in the top 14, with Hartford and New Haven joining Bridgeport on the list.
