Elderly Hartford Man Killed in Tragic Accident

He was struck and killed by his own car after it rolled backward into him, police said.

HARTFORD, CT — An elderly man was killed Monday afternoon after his car rolled back over him while he was unloading groceries, police said.

Eusebio Coutinho, 88, was struck by his car as it rolled backward at 35-37 Merrill Street shortly after 1 p.m. First responders found him pinned under a rear passenger-side tire, according to a police report.

He was rushed to Hartford Hospital with serious injuries but was pronounced dead there, police said.

An investigation revealed Coutinho had been unloading groceries from his car, which had been left running, when it rolled backward and struck him, police said.
