Maternal health crisis focus of Hartford HealthCare community event

Documentary film showing will be followed by facilitated discussion of ways to combat maternal mortality

The maternal health crisis in America has led to many lives lost unnecessarily. Learn more about how Hartford Hospital is working to address this issue, especially seen amongst women of color, at an upcoming community event.

On April 15, Hartford Hospital will be hosting a Women’s Health Community Event at Yard Goats stadium to showcase the multiple resources Hartford Hospital and community partners have to offer.

The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Yard Goats Club at Dunkin’ Park in Hartford. Register here.

There will be a viewing of the film “Aftershock,” a documentary that follows the lives of two families after losing their loved ones to preventable pregnancy related complications. Following the film, there will be a facilitated discussion with Hartford HealthCare experts about mental health, maternal health equity and improving maternal health outcomes.

  • John Santopietro, MD, Hartford HealthCare senior vice president and physician-in-chief of the Behavioral Health Network, who has lectured and published on the integration of behavioral health into primary care practices.
  • Elizabeth Deckers, MD, director of maternal quality and safety for Hartford HealthCare, whose focus includes obstetric emergencies, simulation and teamwork, improving maternal health outcomes.
  • Daileann Hemmings, MSN, RN, director of maternal health equity for women’s health services at Hartford Hospital, whose focus is to address the disparities seen in maternal health and work collaboratively to help all birthing people have the best possible health outcome.
  • DeAngalo Nesby, MBA, MSHA, health equity program manager, Hartford HealthCare, has spent more than six years in healthcare, half of which he has specifically dedicated to the health equity, diversity and inclusion space, advocating on behalf of colleagues, providers, patients and the communities in which they thrive.
