Hartford Honors Fallen Detective With Street Naming

HARTFORD, CT — Hartford has named a portion of High Street in honor of Hartford Police Department Det. Robert “Bobby” Garten, creating a permanent tribute to the city police officer three years after he died in the line of duty.

Members of Garten's family, the HPD and the community gathered Sunday, Sept. 6, for a ceremony officially designating the section of High Street where the city's Public Safety Complex is located as Detective Robert “Bobby” Garten Way.

Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam and former Hartford Mayor and Congressional hopeful Luke Bronin joined Garten's family, friends, fellow officers, and community members for the dedication.

The HPD said the honorary designation recognizes Garten's life, public service, and sacrifice.

“Now, every time a resident, visitor, or police officer travels past the Public Safety Complex, whether they knew Bobby personally or never had the opportunity to know him, they will be reminded of his service, his sacrifice, and the legacy he left behind,” police said.

Garten, badge No. 1781, died in the line of duty on Sept. 6, 2023.

The 34-year-old detective was killed when a vehicle fleeing a traffic stop struck the police cruiser in which he was riding, according to authorities.

His partner, Officer Brian Kearney Jr., was seriously injured in the crash.

The street dedication came just days after the third anniversary of Garten's death.

Police thanked those who participated in the ceremony and Garten's family for joining the department and city in continuing to honor his memory.

“Never forgotten,” the department said.
