Hartford Man Charged With Going 130 Mph On Highway: Police

The reckless driving incident traversed several towns along Route 2 into Hartford.

HARTFORD, CT — State police Thursday have charged a Hartford man for going more than 130 mph in a 65 mph zone on Route 2 last May.

According to Connecticut State Police, Hartford resident Justin Keith Davenport, 36, of Hartford, was charged with reckless driving; disobeying a signal of an officer; and interfering with an officer.

Police said Davenport was released after posting $25,000 bond and he is scheduled to appear in Hartford Superior Court July 28.

State police said the charges stem from an incident May 31, when a trooper working as part of the state police's Aggressive Driving Enforcement Team witnessed a BMW sedan traveling "at reckless speeds" on Route 2 west in Colchester.

According to police, the operator of the BMW, later identified as Davenport, was unaware of a trooper following him on Route 2.

It was during this pursuit that Davenport's vehicle was clocked "in excess of 130 mph as it entered the town of Glastonbury and, eventually, East Hartford."

Police said the BMW was forced to slow down for construction on Route 2 near Exit 5 and that's when the pursuing officer activated his lights and siren in an attempt to stop the vehicle.

According to authorities, the BMW accelerated and hit a concrete barrier before entering a construction zone, "recklessly driving through it in an attempt to engage the trooper in a pursuit."

The trooper broke off the pursuit for safety reasons, police said.

Shortly thereafter, the BMW was seen at a red light on the Founder's Bridge in Hartford.

Police saids the trooper used a stop stick to deflate one of the BMW's tires as it accelerated.

"Once again, the trooper attempted a motor vehicle stop as the accused continued into the busy downtown Hartford district, but the accused again attempted to engage the trooper in pursuit," wrote Connecticut State Police in a release Thursday.

"The trooper did not engage in a pursuit."

Subsequently, a "detailed" investigation ensued with other law enforcement agencies, leading the suspect's identification.

This led to Davenport's charges Thursday, July 6, after he was located and taken into custody without incident, police said.
