HARTFORD, CT — A family is in mourning after a Hartford man died saving his two daughters during a vacation in Puerto Rico last week, according to FOX 61.

Jose Antonio Gonzalez, 42, was swimming with his daughters at a popular beach when they were separated by a large wave. After Gonzalez managed to save his daughters, a wave came and took him. He then hit his head on a rock and drowned, FOX 61 reported.

A GoFundMe for the family had raised $29,833 of its $30,000 target. Kayla Huertas started the page and wrote: "[Gonzalez] was married 19 yrs to Leslie and a devoted father to His daughters Kiyah and Nani. The family is now faced with losing the rock and head of their household as well as the financial reality of having to transport him back to CT. We would love to give him a HERO send off by raising money for transport, funeral/ burial and to keep the family afloat through the grieving times. He was well loved and will be missed by family and friends. We thank you all in advance for any contribution small or big from the bottom of our hearts."
