Hartford Obituary: Victor Alvarado, Sr., 64

Condolences to his family and friends.

Victor Manuel Alvarado, Sr., 64, of West Hartford, beloved husband of the late Gladys Matias, passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2018, at St. Francis Hospital.

Born in Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico on September 21, 1953, son of Maria Santiago of Hartford and the late Antonio Ramon Alvarado, he was raised in Puerto Rico and moved to New York with his family at the age of 15 and then came to Connecticut in 1989. After living in Hartford for 17 years, Victor moved to West Hartford in 2006 to be closer to his family.

Victor served in the US Army during the Vietnam era and was honorably discharged in 1974 as a Private First Class. Victor worked as the food pantry coordinator for Mercy Housing and Shelter Corporation in Hartford until his retirement in 2010 after 13 years of service. In his spare time, Victor enjoyed collecting antiques, fishing, and spending time with his family. Most of all, Victor will be remembered for his friendly and outgoing disposition and for his selflessness.

Besides his mother, Maria Santiago, he leaves seven children, Victor Manual Alvarado, Jr. and his wife Shanda Gray of West Hartford, Hector L. Alvarado and his husband Daniel Szmeiter of Plainville, Doris Alvarado of West Hartford, Virgen Alvarado, Doreen Matias, Damien Matias, and Raymond Santiago all of Hartford; 16 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and 20 brothers and sisters. Besides his wife and his father, he was predeceased by a daughter, Juliet Alvarado.

His family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 31, 5-8 p.m., at the South Green Memorial Home, 43 Wethersfield Ave., Hartford. Family and friends may gather on Thursday, February 1, 10 a.m., at South Green Memorial Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 11 a.m., at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church, Hartford. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield.
