West Hartford Superintendent of Schools Paul Vicinus confirmed to Patch Monday morning that the 17-year-old male victim was a Hall High School senior, with other West Hartford students present as well.

He sent out updates to the school community on Sunday after the shooting and issued this statement to residents:

"Earlier today, our community learned of a shooting in Hartford during which others were tragically caught in the crossfire. It is with a heavy heart that I report that a group of WHPS students are among those impacted, and one student sustained serious injuries and is receiving medical care.

"An incident of this magnitude deeply impacts not only the school, but our entire town. When harm touches our young people, it touches all of us. Our hearts are with the student, the family, and everyone impacted by this senseless event. We ask that the family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time.

"West Hartford has always been a community that responds to hardship with compassion and resolve. In the days ahead, we will continue to support our students, families, and staff, ensuring that counseling and assistance are available to those in need.

"Just as importantly, we encourage all members of our community to check in on one another, especially our youth, who may be struggling to process what has occurred.

"In moments like this, the strength of a community is measured not only by its response, but by its care for one another. We will move forward together with empathy, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of our children."

According to Vicinus, virtual counseling sessions are available via the school system's partnership with the Bridge Family Center in West Hartford, with that information already sent out.

Hartford police said a second victim, a man in his 20s, arrived at a hospital by private vehicle. He is listed in critical but stable condition, police said.

The department’s Major Crimes and Crime Scene divisions responded and have taken over the investigation. Authorities said the case remains active and ongoing.

Sargeant Street Shooting

Later Sunday, at approximately 2:26 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of 248 Sargeant St. after receiving a ShotSpotter notification.

At the scene, officers located a man in his 20s suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to an area hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Major Crimes and Crime Scene units also responded to that location and are investigating. Police said the investigation remains active and ongoing.
