HARTFORD, CT — A massive mural will be unveiled in downtown Hartford in December, but this new piece of public art is more than just another means to visually stimulate community eyes.

It will, quite literally, be comprised of the creative endeavors of the community and funded by their donations.

The Greater Hartford Arts Council's newest project is called the "Art Star Photo Mosaic Mural."

"This extraordinary 400-square-foot public art installation, supported by Shelbourne Global Solutions and LAZ Parking, will be unveiled on Pearl Street in downtown Hartford next to the Gold Building in early December," wrote the council earlier this month.

This is Connecticut’s first and only crowd-sourced photo mosaic mural, in which people's art and photos will, essentially, become the full artistic work.

Designed by local artist Ellis Echevarria, it will comprise thousands of images from local “Art Stars,” including area businesses, individuals, and supporters of the arts.

For a one-time donation, individuals can become an Art Star and contribute a photo to be included in the approximate 20-foot-by-20-foot mural.

"The completed mosaic will also become an interactive digital experience, allowing viewers worldwide to access and explore the individual images and stories that make up the larger tapestry of creativity and community belonging," wrote the council.

The arts council's chief executive said the project's uniqueness lies in more than just the makeup of the mural, but how the mural is being funded and created.

“We are thrilled to give everyday people the opportunity to get involved in transforming the arts in our region,” said the Rev. Dr. Shelley Best, chief executive officer of the Greater Hartford Arts Council.

“Not only will you shine as an Art Star by securing your spot in the state’s only photo mosaic mural, but this crowd-sourced approach democratizes the funding of the arts so that you can directly impact the arts ecosystem here in our local community.”
