As Practice Opens, a Look at Fall State Championships for Hartford's High Schools

HARTFORD, CT — Thursday marks the official opening of practice for fall high school sports, and the first day gives every team hope and optimism that perhaps a state championship is in the cards.

A total of nine Hartford Public High School teams have captured state titles in fall sports in the past:

• boys cross country (7): 1950 (open), 1947 (open), 1942 (open), 1941 (open), 1940 (open), 1938 (open), 1932 (open)
• football (1): 1994 (LL)
• boys soccer (1): 1977 (LL)

Four Weaver High School teams have won state titles in fall sports in past years:

• football (3): 1999 (M), 1997 (M), 1996 (L)
• boys cross country (1): 1939 (open)

Just one fall team from Bulkeley High School has ever won a state championship:

• boys soccer (1): 1975 (L)
