Prominent Hartford Choral Group Names New Associate Director

HARTFORD, CT — The Hartford Gay Men's Chorus has named Connecticut music educator Connor Sullivan its new associate artistic director as the organization prepares for its 15th season.

Sullivan will serve in the leadership role alongside Artistic Director Christopher Clark while also performing with the chorus as a Tenor 1 singing member.

He will additionally serve as ensemble director for On That Note, the chorus announced.

On That Note! is an auditioned a cappella small ensemble founded in 2013 as part of the Hartford Gay Men's Chorus.

Sullivan succeeds Justin Gazard, who will remain with the organization as a singing member.

"We are grateful for Justin's incredible contributions as Associate Artistic Director, and we are delighted that he will continue to share his voice with us on stage," HGMC Executive Director Robert Reader said.

Reader said Sullivan's "passion, vision, and artistic energy" will contribute to the chorus' efforts to build community through music.

Sullivan has spent the past eight years as choir director at Torrington High School, where he also frequently works with the school's theater department.

He was named Torrington High School's Teacher of the Year in 2024 and was recognized by SBO+ Magazine as one of its "50 Teachers Who Make a Difference" in 2023, according to the chorus.

Sullivan earned a bachelor's degree in music from the University of Connecticut, a teaching certificate from Central Connecticut State University, and a master's degree in music education from Boston University.

Outside of his work in music education, Sullivan performs with live bands and has appeared in Warner Community Theater productions in Torrington.

"Joining an ensemble of HGMC's caliber, especially as the chorus celebrates its 15th season, is such an exciting opportunity," Sullivan said.

Sullivan said he previously participated in an HGMC showcase and was impressed by the group's "musicality, professionalism, and inclusive atmosphere."

"I look forward to working alongside these talented singers and embracing new artistic experiences that will both challenge and expand my capabilities," he said.

Founded in 2012, the Hartford Gay Men's Chorus is a 55-member vocal ensemble that performs concerts and participates in community events, Pride celebrations, cultural programs, and other activities. The chorus's upcoming events include "Drag Bingo 7: Queens of the Crypt" on Oct. 25 and its annual holiday concert Dec. 12-13.
