Rhode Island Man Charged With Traveling to Connecticut to Have Sex With Minor

The indictment was announced on Wednesday.

HARTFORD, CT — A federal grand jury in Hartford on Wednesday returned an indictment charging a Rhode Island man with one count of traveling to engage in illegal sexual activity with a minor.

Deirdre M. Daly, United States attorney for the District of Connecticut, detailed the case on Wednesday. The indictment alleges that in September 2015, Nicholas Murphy, 27, of Exeter, R.I., traveled from Rhode Island to Connecticut for the purpose of engaging in a sexual act with a minor.

If convicted of the charge, Murphy faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 30 years, Daly said.

Murphy was arrested on related state charges on May 9. He is scheduled to be arraigned on December 28 in Hartford federal court, Daly said.
