Uber Driver Charged After Passenger Stabbed In East Hartford: PD

The driver claimed he acted in self-defense, according to police.

EAST HARTFORD, CT — Police have arrested an Uber driver who claims he stabbed a passenger last week in self-defense.

The driver, Herton Udene Joseph, 44, was charged with first-degree assault and tampering with evidence, according to Officer Marc Caruso.

On Friday around 1:44 a.m., police responded to a gas station on School Street after a stabbing victim arrived there with wounds to his upper chest and back.

The victim was taken to Hartford Hospital for treatment of serious injuries, police said.

According to police, Joseph previously arrived at the Manchester police department around midnight Thursday night and told that department he had stabbed a passenger in self-defense during an Uber ride.

Following an investigation, police determined the stabbing did not happen in Manchester, but actually occurred in the vicinity of Prestige Park and School Street in East Hartford, police said.

Police seized Joseph’s vehicle at the Manchester Police Department.

Joseph as of Monday remained in custody, being held on a $150,000 bond. Following an initial appearance in Superior Court in Manchester, his case was continued to April 22.
