West Hartford Vehicle Owners Have A Little Tax Work To Do

WEST HARTFORD, CT — The Town of West Hartford has launched a vehicle registration compliance program aimed at ensuring residents properly register their vehicles in Connecticut and that the town's motor vehicle tax records remain accurate.

The town has retained Capital Tax Recovery to conduct a comprehensive review of motor vehicle registration compliance.

The firm has begun identifying vehicles owned or kept by West Hartford residents that may be registered in another state or are not properly registered with the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles.

Under Connecticut law, residents must register their vehicles with the state DMV and designate West Hartford as their tax town if they live in the community.

The West Hartford Assessor's Office is encouraging residents to verify that their vehicle registrations are active by using the Connecticut DMV's online registration verification tool.

Vehicle owners can confirm their registration status by entering their license plate number and plate class, which in most cases is listed as "Passenger."

Town officials said maintaining accurate vehicle registration records helps ensure the motor vehicle grand list is accurate and supports the fair distribution of the local tax burden.

Revenue generated through vehicle taxes helps fund municipal services, including public safety, road maintenance and community programs.

Residents whose vehicles are identified through the compliance review will receive direct notification with instructions on any required registration updates or corrections.

According to the town, most registration issues can be resolved through the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles.

Officials said the program is intended to promote compliance with state law while supporting fair taxation and responsible management of municipal resources.
