LEDYARD, CT — Superstar singer and songwriter Taylor Swift has donated $50,000 to help a local woman who is recovering after being hit by a car in Rhode Island.
Swift recently donated to the GoFundMe campaign, "Support Ashley Taunton's Brave Recovery."
Taunton was seriously injured after she tried to help other motorists.
"Wishing you the best recovery possible and sending love to your family!" Swift said, in a comment on the campaign.
As of Monday at noon, and including the $50,000 boost from Swift, the campaign had raised $90,007 through more than a thousand donations.
The campaign now seeks to raise $110,000.
According to Taunton's friend, campaign organizer Laura Ortelt, money raised will benefit Ashley, her husband, Joe, and their three children.
During a rainstorm on Saturday, July 18, Ashley Taunton was traveling on I-95 and pulled over to help motorists who had been involved in a single car accident, according to Ortelt. While Taunton was helping, another vehicle hydroplaned and came directly toward them.
"In a split-second act of pure bravery, Ashley pushed the other person out of harm's way, taking the brunt of the impact herself," the campaign states.
Ashley was seriously injured and hospitalized at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, where she had to undergo multiple surgeries, according to the campaign.
Money raised will help the family with various expenses, such as household bills, travel expenses for hospital visits, meals and groceries, and medical bills not covered by insurance.
