How to Decorate with WHIMSY

Do you want to make yourself smile and feel happy? Then make sure to add a little “WHIMSY” to your home. It can add personality and bring happiness. What is Whimsy? It’s anything that represents your personality or philosophy of life, in a light-hearted way.

I always say that every home should have some “whimsy” or an element of surprise. You don’t want too much of it. Then it may become confusing. You need just a little of it here and there. Think about some of the following if you can’t think of anything off the top of your head:

1.  A plaque or sign displaying your Family Motto.

2.  A Splash of Bright Color on an Accent Wall. Consider a Small Bathroom. Or, here is something even more daring  . . . . the Laundry Room! Why not?

3.   A Stuffed Animal in a most unexpected place, such as on a bookcase or end table.

4.   Don’t forget your Yard. Many of the local garden centers stock “characters” for your garden.

5.   Add a personally Monogrammed  or  Wild Fabric-Coverd Pillow to your otherwise drab Sofa.

6.   For your Kitchen or Bathroom Walls: think of something child-like, such as Framed Antique Children’s Prints or Nursery Rhymes. Even a favorite drawing by your child or grandchild. 

7.   How about adding a Family Mascot to your home. Consider a Ceramic Dog or Cat sitting near the Front Door, and give him/her a name!  

8.   Yes, even a Pink Flamingo! It may seem tacky, but actually they are somewhat campy. When I see one, it  makes me laugh. And, isn’t that what we all need more of?
