Sad Day

Please spay or neuter your cats. Even if they are ALWAYS indoors, they get out!

I had had a busy morning and lunchtime found me running into Subway in Ledyard Center for a quick lunch. A young woman came towards me as I left, with tears in her eyes. She had found a 5-day old kitten that had been dropped by a predator in her yard. The kitten was severely injured but still alive. I cradled her in a soft blanket and we headed to our vets, All Friends Animal Hospital.

As the kitten's cries got weaker I kept reminding her she was loved and not alone. She passed on before we got there. She was not alone when she died but so many stray and feral cats and kittens are. They are born in the woods, under bushes and in sheds. They are run over, attacked by wild and domestic animals and the few that survive begin as early as 8 months to have litters of their own.

Ledyard is blessed to have a woman named who runs the Stray and Feral Cat Rescue in our area. She depends on donations and helps people who have been feeding these strays because they feel bad for them but do not want them to have more babies. Melinda uses donations to get them spayed or neutered and updated on their vaccines. Her program is fantastic and has helped stop the growth of the stray and feral cat population by many.

So today was a sad one here at animal control but on the upside the goat who found her way here last week will be returning home tonight! Good Bye Billie Ann!
